The next celestial event, the Venus Transit, will occur on June 5 or 6, depending on your time zone. Venus went retrograde on May 12, just a week or so before the Ring of Fire:Solar Eclipse. This Venus event coincides with the Full Moon, which is also a Lunar Eclipse! Venus goes back direct on June 27. You are probably aware of what Mercury Retrograde means. Just imagine the same chaos, only instead of dealing with communication and technology, we are dealing with love and relationships!

Introduction to Transits of Venus

Transits of Venus across the disk of the Sun are among the rarest of planetary alignments. Indeed, only six such events have occurred since the invention of the telescope (1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874 and 1882). The next two transits of Venus will occur on 2004 June 08 and 2012 June 06.

The principal events occurring during a transit are characterized by contacts. The event begins with contact I which is the instant when the planet's disk is externally tangent with the Sun. The entire disk of the Venus is first seen at contact II when the planet is internally tangent with the Sun. During the next several hours, Venus gradually traverses the solar disk at a relative angular rate of approximately 4 arc-min/hr. At contact III, the planet reaches the opposite limb and is once again internally tangent with the Sun. The transit ends at contact IV when the planet's limb is externally tangent to the Sun. Contacts I and II define the phase called ingress while contacts III and IV are known as egress. Greatest transit is the instant of minimum angular separation between Venus and the Sun as seen from Earth's geocenter."

The transit or passage of a planet across the face of the Sun is a relatively rare occurrence. As seen from Earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possible. On average, there are 13 transits of Mercury each century. In contrast, transits of Venus occur in pairs with more than a century separating each pair.

The last Venus transit was in 2004 so the second event of the pair will occur on Wednesday, June 6 (Tuesday, June 5 from the Western Hemisphere). The entire event will be widely visible from the western Pacific, eastern Asia and eastern Australia as shown in Figure 1. Most of North and Central America, and northern South America will witness the beginning of the transit (on June 5) but the Sun will set before the event ends. Similarly, observers in Europe, western and central Asia, eastern Africa and western Australia will see the end of the event since the transit will already be in progress at sunrise from those locations.

Table 2 and Table 3 list predicted contact times and corresponding altitudes of the Sun for locations throughout Canada and the United States, respectively. Table 4 provides similar predictions for a number of cities around the world.

Venus is the Roman name for the Greek Aphrodite, goddess of love, grace, beauty and sexual rapture. Venus has also been called the "jewel of the sky"; "Eosphorus as the morning star and Hesperus as the evening star"; from a modern day astronomer's view, "Earth's sister planet"; and from an astrologer's view, the "compliment to Mars."

Other cultural names for Venus include: the Babylonian Ishtar; the Syro-Palestinian goddess Ashtart; the Aztec: Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli (meaning "Lord of the House of Dawn."), an apparition of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent; the Maya: Kukulcan (Venus was the Mayan patron of warfare, with several battles coinciding with significant Venus alignments); and the Norse Sif, noted for her "conjugal fidelity." Aside from the asteroids, Venus is the only main planet named after a goddess--sorry to say for our soul-ar system.

The Venus Transit Theme

There are several factors defining the theme of this event:

• The Lunar Cycle in which the Venus transit occurs. (The Venus Transit occurs in the May 20, 2012 Lunar Cycle: A Solar Annular Eclipse)
• Where in the Lunar Cycle the transit occurs (just after the Full Moon Partial Eclipse in Ophiuchus).
• The addditional geometrical aspects to Venus at the time of the transit and other significant planetary aspects.

Kursa of Eridanus, Rigel of Orion and the Shield of Orion are the primary conjoining stars of the Venus-Sun alignment (Venus Transit). Kursa
marks the beginning of Eridanus, the River of Life. Kursa, Rigel and its immediate surounding cosmology define the theme of the event.

So, this event takes place with Full Moon in Ophiuchus/Scorpio as well as Venus in Taurus. When we look at the Moon, we will be looking towards
the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.

Astrologically, Venus represents our relationships with others. Communication is a major factor in all of our relationships. The questions now become: What are we communicating to our world – love or fear? and, How is our media (the Internet, computer games, the movie industry, cell phones, etc.), affecting society as a whole?

If you are sick and tired of living a life made dull by the poor choices to please others and you have submerged creative fire in your belly, now is the time to make the changes necessary to live a freer, more authentic life.
